The People Who Care
Meet Yasin Kalibala, Florence Nakiyi, Milly Nakitende and Ssengooba Lawrence
A word from our founder:
Dear Friends,
I am Ssengooba Lawrence, the founder of The Ssengooba Foundation and The Equality for Orphans Ministries. My journey to this work began in my childhood, where poverty and hardship led to my own abandonment by my parents. A good Samaritan adopted me, giving me a second chance at life, yet I faced countless challenges along the way.
In high school, I met a friend whose story mirrored my own, and together, we made a vow to bring hope to children who, like us, faced life without the comfort of a stable family.
After finishing our studies, we took that dream forward and started Equality for Orphans Ministries. We began humbly with five children in a small one-room rented house. Today, we have grown, supporting over 25 children--some in our care, others with trusted caregivers. Our mission has also expanded to help elderly individuals, single mothers, and people with disabilities, all of whom deserve dignity and hope.
Our mission is simple but powerful: to provide hope, education, and empowerment to vulnerable communities. We believe every child deserves a future filled with possibilities, and every person deserves compassion and respect.
Thank you for considering supporting our cause. Together, we can bring lasting change to these lives and create brighter futures.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Ssengooba Lawrence
Founder, Ssengooba Foundation Equality for Orphans Ministries
At The Ssengooba Foundation, it’s the people behind the scenes who make our mission possible. Each member of our team brings unique experiences, skills, and an abundance of love and care to the children we serve.
Yasin Kalibaba
Co-Founder and Advocate for Vulnerable Children
Yasin is a lifelong friend of Ssengooba Lawerence, whom he met in high school. Both were orphaned as children and taken in by good Samaritans, a shared experience that bonded them. Together, they vowed to dedicate their lives to helping vulnerable and abandoned children, ensuring no child feels alone. Yasin’s unwavering dedication and compassion drive the heart of our mission.
Florence Nakiyi
The Grandmother of Ssengooba House
Florence is the soul of the foundation, providing the children with the wisdom, guidance, and unconditional love that only a grandmother can offer. Beyond preparing food and ensuring clean clothes for school, she nurtures the children with her kind heart, warm smiles, and gentle hugs. Florence’s presence creates a safe and loving environment where every child feels valued.
Milly Nakitende
Second-in-Command and Motherly Mentor
Milly is Florence’s right hand and a cornerstone of daily life at Ssengooba House. Often seen with little Diego perched on her hip, Milly moves seamlessly between chores, offering care, encouragement, and laughter to the children. Her energy and warmth inspire everyone around her, making the home a place of joy and comfort.
Jodi L. Huckaby
United States Advocate and Administrator
Jodi is the bridge between The Ssengooba Foundation and its growing network of supporters in the United States. As the foundation's advocate and administrator, she dedicates herself to spreading awareness, raising funds, and ensuring the foundation’s mission is carried out with integrity and transparency.
Through daily communication with Ssengooba Lawrence and the team in Uganda, Jodi remains deeply connected to the children and their needs. On weekends, she video chats with the children to hear their stories and share moments of joy, keeping their spirits high and their voices heard.
Jodi also plays a pivotal role in managing operations, developing outreach strategies, and building meaningful connections with donors, partners, and communities. With a passion for empowering vulnerable children and a heart for service, Jodi works tirelessly to bring hope and lasting change to those in need.
